Recycled Bird Feeder

First you need an empty plastic bottle. Wash it out! 

Carefully cut out a hole and ensure there are no sharp areas that might hurt the birds. Then pierce the bottom using a pen. My mum helped with this part. 

Then find some string or something to hang it up with. 

Next fill with food, such as seeds or nuts. 

Then find somewhere to put it! 

Urban Tree Survey

Over the summer holidays I have been carrying out an urban tree survey. In order to help me I have used a leaf chart downloaded from the natural history museum. I have been recording if the leaves are  compound or simple and how they are arranged on the twigs. I have also looked at the  shape and textures of the leafs.

I have discovered that the most common trees in my area are the alder, beech, holly, oak and sycamore. We also have a lot of weeping willows which suggest water must be close by.

My project for today was to build a birdbox. With the help of my parents the project was complete in no time at all!

Plan Bee

Bees are a very important part of our ecological system. However, I have seen on Newsround that they are in decline. This is mainly due to the bad chemicals being used on crops. Bee populations have reduced by over 50% and wild honeybees are almost extinct in the UK!

We need to do more to protect ours bees (and other wildlife). No mater what you think of bugs they all serve a purpose on earth and without them our climate would suffer. We are their caretakers and we have failed our purpose, but it is not yet too late to take action...

• Buy honey from a caring bee keeper. 

• Stop spraying nasty chemicals on plants. 

Penguins of BirdWorld

Penguins

I recently got to visit Birdworld with my parents and it was AMAZING! However, I was sad to discover that penguins are rapidly declining. This is mainly due to the fact we like the same fish as them and as fish stocks diminish so do the populations of penguins.  However, some penguins are leaving their natural habitat in search of fresh fish stock and this means they are facing new dangers they have not faced before.

You may see a heron in the photograph having an 'identity crisis' as he is pretending to be a penguin. Herons are not part of Birdworld they have just seen how good the residents have it and fly in for some free food!

Minibeasts Close-up

A woodlouse.

Over the summer holidays I have been taking a close-up look at minibeasts. I have been exploring many different sites including the local wild grounds and my very own garden.

One of the most common bugs I have come across over the last 3 months is the woodlouse. They are crustaceans and are from a group called Isopoda. They are normally grey in colour although the one in the picture above appears more brown. They have about 7 pairs of legs and are oval shape. They like to live in damp conditions normally on ground surfaces under fallen leaves and decaying logs.
